Why Treasure Boxes? I've always had a passion for wooden boxes, even as a child.A closed wooden box is an object of both beauty and mystery. There is an art to creating even the simplest of boxes.Yes, they all have 4 walls, a base, and a lid; but the art is in the fine lines and delicate curves created in construction.
Looking at a closed box, a viewer begins to wonder what mysteries can be found under the lid.The treasure stored in one box is as unique as the owner themselves.A simple wooden box can hold such wonder and magic, comparable to a child discovering buried treasure within the dusty old cedar chest in their grandma's attic. Hidden Treasure Box is the marriage of a fruitless pursuit for an unattainable artisan box and a secret passion for woodworking. It was the early 1980's. I was in my 20's with two small daughters.Money was tight. We lived paycheck to paycheck and shopping typically consisted of looking through store windows. One day, I happened upon a wooden box with a secret drawer at Oriental Trading in Altoona.I fell in love.It was beautiful. And priced absolutely out of reach. Months later, after I had saved enough, I returned to buy my treasure but it was gone.I went back several more times but unfortunately I never saw one like it again. The saved money bought groceries. Years passed, my children grew, life moved on, but I never forgot the box.I looked for it everywhere - yard sales, auctions, flea markets, and specialty stores. It wasn't to be found. One day I read a short story about three young boys searching for hidden treasure during a hot summer in a small Florida town and it all came together. If I couldn't find the box with the secret hidden drawer, then I was going to make my own. I started with a small table saw in a corner of the garage and the Hidden Treasure Box was born.
